Port Exhibitions updated the event photo in Subversive Communication - Street Art Exhibition Second Saturdays

Port Exhibitions and the SIABC Gallery are please to present "Subversive Communication," an exhibition of artwork by artists who utilize the public space in their practice.

These artists refuse to operate within the constructs of the traditional art world, instead choosing to create a more direct dialogue with the viewer. By creating or installing their work in public they can communicate with a much broader audience than normally possible.

This exhibition will feature the work of Stikman, Jordan Seiler, Cram, Faile, Skull Phone, Roycer, Nosego, One Tooth, Shepard Fairey, Chris RWK, Cost, Exist 1981, and Buttsup.

Gallery Hours 12-5pm

Staten Island Arts' current Culture Lounge exhibition Working Waterfront: Memories Hold, features a film series exploring NY state water-based occupations and travel, as well as the lifecycle of waterfront economies. The series commences with “Graves of Arthur Kill,” a film by Gary Kane and directed by Will Van Dorp that documents Staten Island’s ship graveyard, one of the most significant in the region.

Arthur Kill, a waterway separating Staten Island from New Jersey, traces its name to the Dutch worlds for “back channel.” This channel is in fact where many boats come to die. An areal view of the waters exposes partially submerged hulks of rusting tugboats, rotting barges and crumbling ferries. Among them one finds the remains of a history-making submarine chaser from World War II and one of New York City’s storied fireboats. Graves of Arthur Kill captures the aesthetic allure of this strange boneyard and explores the history of some of the vessels that have ended their days in its murky waters.

Staten Island Arts’ Culture Lounge at the St. George Ferry Terminal is a meeting place and project space.Culture Lounge exhibits both international and local artists, including visual artists, poets, musicians, writers, and performers. The focus is on artistic projects that are place-based–examining local communities, helping people consider their environs in new ways, exploring how neighborhoods might be more livable and sustainable, and/or creating ways visitors can become more socially engaged.
